In these comments submitted to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstration, CEG urges DOE to extend the deadline for comments on the proposed scope of the Environmental Impact Statement for the Appalachian Hydrogen Hub by another 60 days. This is due to limited information on the scope and locations of the proposed projects, leading to a lack of community knowledge and awareness of the potential environmental impact of the development of the hub. CEG then lays out the potential dangers and consequences of hydrogen energy, including hydrogen’s global warming potential, safety concerns, water and energy use in production, and end use concerns. DOE is also urged to consider the health and safety implications for citizens of the Appalachian region, as well as whether the hydrogen hub aligns with broader decarbonization goals within the region.
